So many people freak out when a vegetarian (or horror of horrors, a vegan!) comes to dinner, but really, there’s nothing to worry about. There are tons of doable recipes and even an entire section of Martha Stewart’s website dedicated to vegetarian Thanksgiving ideas. You just have to do a little planning and remember a few key issues I’ve frequently run into as a vegetarian guest: poultry and fish are still meat, meat stock comes from meat, bacon grease also comes from meat, vegans don’t eat any animal products at all, and my husband’s and my vegetarianism is NOT an appropriate topic to dwell on at length – particularly when we’ve only been offered bread and corn to eat.
Sorry for the tiny rant, there. That stuff just happens ALL the time. If we know we’re going to a place not prepared for veggie guests, the husb and I often pregame by eating some nuts or hummus ahead of visiting. Just don’t make us talk about why we don’t eat meat and “how all that works.” ;)
