It’s no secret knitting is my jam. But a few years ago during a super fun life period stuck between college graduation, trying to find some kind of job, and smack in the middle of the height of the recession, I decided it was time I learned to crochet. It’s fun, pretty easy to learn, and I find it easier to crochet 3D objects like amigurumi than to knit in 3D. This week the lovely Marie from Make & Takes invited me to design & share an easy crochet pattern in her crochet-a-day series, so I went old school and put together an easy (and super addictive) crochet hacky sack pattern.

These are great for handmade gifts for boys, baby toys & a set of three makes an adorable juggling gift set. Bonus: they take just about an hour to make.

These are way too cute! I am trying to make some for my students but am having some difficulty. Round 2 comes out perfect, but I can’t seem to get the 18 stitches on round 3 no matter how many times I try. I only end up with 13 stitches. How can I increase to get my 18? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :-)

No problem, Kristi. Round three reads, “Round 3: 2 sc in next st, sc in next st around (18 sts).” This means you’ll do 2 sc in the same st, and just one sc in the next. Over the course of 12 sts, you’ll work {2 sc in 1 (2 sts), 1 sc in 1 (1 st)] 6 times. This will result in 12 sts + 6 sts = 18 sts. We started the round with 12 sts, and added 6 sts (one in every other st) evenly over the course of round 3. Does that make sense? Hope this helps!
