Books for review and giveaway were provided by the publishers.
Last year, I shared three then-new books for makers in a summer reading themed review and giveaway. It was so much fun that we’re doing it again today! This year, I’ve got 2 books to review and give away, and both happen to have a knitting focus. For families, we have another cute picture book (making themed picture books bring me so much delight ❤️), and for knitters who love colorwork, we have a gorgeous new title featuring mosaic knitting. Let’s dive in!
Enter to win a copy of both titles in the giveaway below.
A Hat for Grandma by Madalina Hubert with Illustrations by Bella Maher
As a woman whose grandmother taught her to knit, A Hat for Grandma was a cute picture book to discover. Featuring a nervous little girl eager to make her grandma a hole-free hat she will love, this book is a fun way to sneak a little knitting onto your favorite kid’s picture book shelf.
As you can see, A Hat for Grandma‘s sweet illustrations feature knitwear that looks like knitwear. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to knit themselves a hat just like the one worn by the main character. 😊
Mosaic Knitting Workshop by Ashleigh Wempe
This book is lovely. Between the beautiful cover design, contemporary layout and font choices, and the well-styled, light-filled photographs, this is a must-own knitting book for me. Mosaic knitting is a type of colorwork I’ve always felt was under-explored/represented in the knit design world, and this book presents a contemporary spin on the technique. My kind of knitting book!
Each pattern featured includes beautiful finished object photos, charts, and some even have photographs of alternate colorways for comparison. That’s almost unheard of and *pretty awesome* if you’re a regular colorwork knitter. Imagine seeing a pattern in black and white and not being sure what it would look like with the colors reversed or with a couple of less contrasting yarn colors. Oh wait, you don’t have to if you’re a knitter who has ever selected yarn for a colorwork project. (That last sentence sounds way spicier than I actually feel, but it’s also hilarious because it’s definitely accurate. 😆 )
My favorite section of most knitting books is often at the front or back, and it’s where the real meat of the book lives (for me anyway). Patterns are lovely and this book is absolutely stand out in that area, but if you’re not teaching how to do a technique in a book about technique, why does the title exist? Luckily, this book has a beautiful Techniques section at the back covering everything from a kfb to mattress stitch, and a section at the front of the book covering what you need to know to accomplish mosaic knitting: reading charts, choosing colors, etc.
